Malachi Jude
4 months
Malachi sure
has grown fast! I thought you might like to see what he is wearing
now. He hasn't been in for a doctor visit yet, but his weight is
somewhere around 18 whopping pounds!!! He is quite tall and has very
chubby thighs.
Our
"stash" these days consists of the following (approximately):
8 small Growing Cheekies
1 medium Growing Cheekies
6 small covers
1 medium cover
8 one-size pocket diapers
3 size small pocket diapers (yes, they come in sizes)
Additionally, I use 2 large wetbags and 1 travel size
wetbag (though I could use another). We have approximately 24
wipes. I have a 2-year old in diapers, and we have about 17 pocket
diapers for him. I have a 4-year old who still needs training pants
at night and he has 5 pair of those. We wash diapers every other
day.
Malachi nurses
frequently from about 4-5 am on, so his morning time diapers are the
heaviest wet all day. If he's going to leak, it will happen then!
Nighttime:
for nighttime, I use a size small Growing Cheekies diaper with it's normal
snap-in soaker, and a snap-in from his Little Cheekies also snapped in as
a doubler. Our favorite covers are minkee--they stand up to a LOT of
wetness without wicking.

"Oh Mom, is that my favorite diaper with bamboo lining?" This
diaper is made with a sherpa outer and hidden layer of sherpa with an
attached layer of cotton terry in the wet zone. The inner is bamboo
velour. The closures are Touctape. This diaper still fits good
(it is a size small), but it is starting to get snug. It helps that
it is really stretchy. The rise is getting a little short on my tall
boy. It doesn't get any better than with a soft minkee
cover:
Daytime:
For daytime we rotate between fitteds and pockets. I love the ease
of pocket diapers. They are incredibly user friendly. Fitteds
are so dependable. M. J. has nice blowout diapers all the time, and
he has never leaked out of a fitted and cover.

This
is one of my favorite covers, but the small is obviously
getting...um...small! After all, I do say on my site that small goes
up to 15 lbs, and he was 15 lbs at 2 months! This cover is a single layer
of 100% cotton knit that has been laminated with 2 mil PUL. It is
perfect for daytime use, but is usually ok for nighttime too (I
wouldn't wake him up to change it). Most of his one size
pocket diapers have Touchtape on them, but I recently drafted one with
snaps and am so satisfied with the placement that I have been offering
them for sale. I think that the Touchtape may need to be replaced
before passing the diapers on to another child, especially since the
one-size diapers tend to see more use.

The
celery PUL is my current favorite. It is so warm!

I
stuff his pocket diapers with inserts made from 100% cotton terry or
inserts purchased from my friend Denise at This-End-Up. My terry
inserts are usually a 2-layer rectangle either 12 or 16 inches by 10
inches. I then fold that in half to form a 4-layer insert that is 5
inches wide. The longer inserts are folded down in front to put
extra absorbency right where my little man needs it. He often needs
a doubler with the shorter inserts. That is the beauty of pocket
diapers--the absorbency is easily customized to fit individual needs of
each baby! The next size: Well, moving up to
the next size in a one-size pocket diaper is easy. I just snap them
on the middle row of snaps. I don't even unsnap them to wash
them. He is almost ready for this big change. I have
one Growing Cheekies size medium diaper and one size medium
(minkee, of course) cover.
This diaper is a side-snapping medium Growing
Cheekies. It has a flannel outer, hidden inner of hemp with an
attached layer of terry in the wet zone, and inner of microfleece.
He is dry and comfy in this diaper! I do still add a doubler for
nighttime. The rise is just perfect. Because he has fat
thighs, though, the leg snap is already on the last snap! He has
room to grow in the waist, and I anticipate (from experience) that his
body proportions will change before he grows out of this diaper.
Even if I could only get the waist snap closed on the diaper, with the
right cover he would still have all the protection he needs!
